competitions
Competitions take place at regional, national and international level. BAV hold their regional championships annually, while the National Championships are held every two years. During the Nationals, pilots can compete to represent Australia at the World Championships.
Competitors are required to demonstrate a high level of skill to complete a number of tasks over a set course. Pilots must use the varying wind directions and speeds found at different altitudes to 'steer' the balloon towards a target. Targets are often identified as a large cross, which weighted markers are thrown onto or close to from the balloon basket. The closest marker to the target wins the most points.
